MEASURING GUIDE FOR SLIDING WARDROBE DOORS
Getting accurate measurements is the first step towards ordering wardrobe doors that fit your space. This measuring guide for sliding wardrobe doors explains how to measure sliding wardrobe doors before placing an order with Robeoutlet.
Measure the wardrobe opening, not the existing doors, and record the height and width in millimetres. Check more than one point, as floors, ceilings and walls may not be perfectly level or parallel. Accurate measurements help you choose the right configuration for made to measure sliding wardrobe doors.
Tools and Preparation for Measuring Wardrobe Doors
Before you begin, gather a tape measure, pen and paper (or another way to record dimensions in millimetres), and ensure you can access the full height and width of the opening.
Check for skirting boards, cornices, trims, shelves or other features that may affect the available space. An opening can look straight without being square.
Step 1: Measure the Height of the Wardrobe Opening
Measure vertically from the floor or finished floor surface to the underside of the top of the opening. Take two measurements:
-
Left Height: Measure at the left side of the opening.
-
Right Height: Measure at the right side.
Enter both readings in the Left Height and Right Height fields when ordering.
Small differences are normal. The door wheels can be adjusted by up to 10 mm, and the top track has enough room for the doors to move up or down by this amount. If the difference between the two heights is more than 10 mm, level the opening before ordering, or pack the tracks to the correct height with packers during installation.
Step 2: Measure the Width of the Wardrobe Opening
Measure horizontally across the opening in two places:
-
Top Width: Measure near the top of the opening.
-
Bottom Width: Measure near the bottom.
Measure the bottom width along the floor, where the bottom track will sit, and the top width at the top of the opening, where the top track will be fixed. Enter both readings in the Top Width and Bottom Width fields when ordering – the tracks can be cut to different lengths to suit.
If the difference between the top and bottom widths is more than 20 mm, we recommend straightening the walls yourself or with the help of a carpenter before ordering.
These measurements help you order made to measure wardrobe doors and choose between Framed doors, Frameless doors and Slimline doors.
Why You Should Measure the Opening, Not the Doors
Measure the wardrobe opening, not individual door panels. Robeoutlet uses the dimensions you enter to calculate the appropriate door sizes and system components for the selected configuration.
Enter the exact opening measurements without any deductions when ordering your sliding wardrobe doors made to measure. We make all the necessary deductions for the tracks and frames during production.
The configurator accepts openings from 600 mm to 5,100 mm wide and configurations of two to five doors. Individual doors are made to measure at 300-1,200 mm wide and up to 2,700 mm high. If your opening is wider than 5,100 mm, email us at sales@robeoutlet.com.au or contact us by filling out our enquiry form to discuss your options.
Our doors are made for openings up to 2,700 mm high. If your opening is taller, reduce its height before ordering, for example by adding a bulkhead.
Step 3: How to Check the Space Needed for Sliding Door Tracks
Check the available depth inside the opening before choosing a track. The required depth depends on the door range and configuration.
|
Door system |
Double track |
Triple track |
|
Framed |
82 mm |
122 mm |
|
Frameless |
82 mm |
122 mm |
|
Slimline |
55 mm |
82 mm |
Check the space where the track will sit for obstructions. Confirm compatibility with your door range and number of doors, as options vary by configuration.
Choosing between a double and triple track depends on your needs, available space, and the level of functionality you’re looking for. Let’s explore the key differences to help you decide which option is right for you
A double track has two running channels, while a triple track has three. For a three-door configuration, a triple track is recommended because each door runs in its own channel, allowing wider access to the wardrobe.
Three doors may also be used with a double track where the configuration permits, but access is more limited: only around one-third of the opening may be accessible at a time. Compare the options for your preferred Framed, Frameless or Slimline system before ordering.
Measuring Around Uneven Floors, Skirting Boards and Cornices
The surrounding area can affect track position and fit. Before ordering, check:
-
Uneven floors or ceilings: Compare the left and right height measurements and look for changes in level.
-
Non-parallel walls: Compare the top and bottom width readings.
-
Skirting boards: Check whether the skirting projects into the space needed for the system.
-
Cornices and overhead obstructions: Make sure trims do not interfere with the top track or clearance.
Do not remove skirting or alter cornices without assessing the installation first. Robeoutlet does not provide installation services. For a difficult opening or floor, seek advice before ordering. See the sliding wardrobe doors installation guide.
Common Sliding Wardrobe Door Measuring Mistakes
Avoid these common errors:
-
Measuring at only one point: Check both sides for height and both the top and bottom for width.
-
Measuring the existing doors: Use the opening dimensions requested by the configurator.
-
Using centimetres instead of millimetres: Record every measurement in mm.
-
Not entering both readings: Enter both heights and both widths in the configurator.
-
Skipping the track-depth check: Make sure there is enough space for the selected system.
-
Overlooking skirting or cornices: These can affect track position and clearance.
-
Making your own deductions: Enter the exact opening size – we make all deductions during production.
-
Not checking entries before ordering: Review each measurement and configuration selection before submitting your order.
FAQ
What measurements do I need for sliding wardrobe doors?
Measure the opening height on the left and right, and the width at the top and bottom. Use millimetres and enter all four readings in the configurator.
What If My Wardrobe Opening Is Not Square?
Enter both height readings and both width readings. Height differences of up to 10 mm are covered by the adjustable wheels, and the tracks can be cut to suit different widths. If the height differs by more than 10 mm or the width by more than 20 mm, level the opening before ordering.
How Do I Choose the Right Track for My Wardrobe Opening?
Match the track to the door range, available depth and number of doors. Framed and Frameless use 82 mm double or 122 mm triple tracks; Slimline uses 55 mm double or 82 mm triple tracks. A triple track is recommended for three doors.
Can Sliding Wardrobe Doors Be Installed with Skirting Boards?
Yes. Measure the bottom width along the floor where the bottom track will sit and check that the skirting does not obstruct the track. See the installation guide.
What Is the Maximum Size for Made-to-Measure Sliding Wardrobe Doors?
Individual doors are 300-1,200 mm wide and up to 2,700 mm high. The configurator accepts openings 600-5,100 mm wide for two to five doors.
